Happy Birthday Scarlett O'Hara ....

Vivien Leigh was one of Britain's finest actresses and screen goddesses, proving that beauty and talent can come in the same package.  Although forever famous as Scarlett O'Hara in the 1939 blockbuster "Gone with the Wind", she ticked all the boxes; a great film and stage actress, and a great star.  An Anglo-Indian, the Convent school educated Vivien was born Vivian Hartley to parents Ernest and Gertrude in Darjeeling, British Indian in 1913.  When she died in 1967, front page headlines hailed "Scarlett O'Hara is dead".  Leigh died of tuberculosis, an illness which had plagued her for most of her life, at her elegant apartment in Eton Square, Belgravia, London.  She was 53.  Her ashes were scattered in the mill pond of her Queen Anne country estate, in Essex....

Happy birthday Vivien ....

  2. Hi Dianne!

I always thought she was a beautiful woman. I had no idea she died at such an early age, or from TB.

Do you ever go by "Di"?

  4. Vivien was such an interesting woman, very tenacious and beautiful. Wasn't she married to Laurence Olivier? I do not think it worked out though.

I hope you are having a fabulous weekend!

  7. GOOD MORNING MY FRIEND,

She is one of my all time favorites for her brilliant role as Scarlet AND as Blanche in Streetcar...and her life with Sir Lawrence appears as one of the most iconic relationships in history. But one thing that endears me to this lovely woman is that my Auntie, my mother's sister, looked JUST LIKE HER!!! To think that she died at 53, my age? Oh dear....

Enjoy a peaceful week my dear, Anita

  11. Dianne I grew up and apparently I grow old with Scarlett O'Hara, she has been a huge part of my life, kinda like a subtle inspirational adviser... Vivien Leigh has a very sad story, to me she almost identifies with Scarlett but of course that is unfair.
She deserved more from the public since she was a huge actress but as she was saying...she consumed herself very fast...
    Great post...

  12. What a fabulous post!
I loved Vivien Leigh--those amazing eyes...
Her role as Scarlett will always remain my favorite, even though she was incredible as Blanche with Brando. What a match...
A truly sad story...to think what other roles she could have played both on the screen and off.
    LOVED this...thank you!
    Have a wonderful week!

  14. My dear Di, what a great post. My favourite line from 'Gone with the wind' movie was a line delivered by Clark Gable/Rhett Butler to Scarlett: 'No, I don't think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how.'

PS. My dear, Just to let you know that I have moved to a new web address - http://asuperdilettante.blogspot.com/
